Lessons from the Road: or from an 8 yr old playing Wii

A few months ago, on one of my visits to the amazing family I visit in Dayton, OH, I was playing Wii with their youngest daughter. We were doing some bicycle race where you have a controller in each hand and you move your hands as though they were making the peddles go. I am not great at video games and this was my first time with this game, so she was trying to teach me how to do it. It seemed pretty simple and I was frantically moving my hands and yet kept falling behind and even loosing lives. She looked over at me and said something to the effect of, "Miss Sarah, you're heart is going crazy. don't try to go so fast, just try to be steady".

I think of this conversation during many of my training rides especially as I start heading up a hill. This is something that I have known about riding, but didn't always implement it. It helps so much to have the voice of one of my favorite currently 8 yr olds running through my head- it's so simple, just keep it steady. Thanks, L!
